Forward into Grace

For the longest time I have
really loved this song
“Sunshine on my shoulders
makes me happy”
as I tunelessly hum along
my smile carries memories of 
all those late afternoons
settling down in a pool
of sunlight on the sofa

Months have passed 
with the world awash
in a blaze of sunshine 
and too much bright light
but I haven’t felt its warmth 
confined as I was to silence 
in a dark cave of demons 
shadowboxing with grief 

Now in my daughter’s home
the air outside is cold
inside a snug embrace
of care and tenderness 
waking up to sip hot tea
as squares of sunlight 
softly caress the walls
I feel myself submit to 
falling forward into grace.
